NATURAL LIVING AT HOME

We recently teamed up with REMODELISTA, one of our favorite sources for sophisticated and sensible home design inspiration, to share how to use essential oils in the home. From an air freshener and all-purpose cleaner to yoga mat spray, here are several smart, simple ways to make all natural cleaning products for your home.

As the most potent form of plant medicine, many essential oils have antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal properties, making them an all-natural alternative to many store-bought products that are often laden with chemicals (which can do more harm than good). The following recipes for home and personal use have been gathered from and inspired by some of our favored aromatherapists and our moms.

ALL NATURAL AIR FRESHENER

Essential oils from the Ylang Ylang flower, peel of Sweet Orange and leaf of Marjoram combine to make a relaxing scent for the home. Simply blend the oils and add a few drops to a diffuser or combine with distilled water to make a spray.

  • 2 oz glass spray bottle
  • 2 oz distilled water
  • 5 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil (Cananga odorata)
  • 20 drops Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)
  • 10 drops Marjoram essential oil (Citrus sinensis)

LINEN SPRAY

Linen sprays are a great way to provide daily freshness to bed linens and bath towels. They also help to take care of stagnant air in a bedroom, living room or bathroom. The basis for a good blend is what appeals to you.

Lavender Relaxation
  • 2 oz glass spray bottle
  • 2 oz distilled water
  • 7 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 5 drops Cedarwood essential oil (Juniperus virginiana)
  • 3 drops Vetiver Essential Oil (Vetiver zizanoides)

Ylang Ylang Comfort

  • 2 oz glass spray bottle
  • 2 oz distilled water
  • 10 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil (Cananga odorata)
  • 20 drops Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)
  • 4 drops Neroli essential oil (Citrus aurantium)

Combine ingredients in a small glass spray bottle and shake well. We suggest making a fresh bottle every few weeks.

This all-natural household disinfectant can be used to clean and kill bacteria on kitchen and bathroom surfaces as well as disinfect kitchen sponges. To disinfect sponges, spray both sides of sponge after use and leave overnight.

  • 2 oz glass spray bottle
  • 1.5 oz water
  • 1 tsp castile soap
  • 1 Tbs hydrogen peroxide
  • 10 drops Peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita)
  • 5 drops Eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus globulus)

Tried and true as taught by mom, the best all-natural glass, window and mirror cleaner is an equal blend of vinegar and water.

  • Spray bottle of choice
  • 50/50 white vinegar and distilled water

WOOD POLISH

It’s important to maintain wood furniture and wood features in the home. Frequent dusting or wiping with a damp cloth should be accompanied by polishing every 2-3 months. This all-natural wood polish will bring dull wood back to life.

  • 8 oz spray bottle
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 10 drops Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)

Combine ingredients and shake well. Apply to a microfiber cloth and wipe wood surfaces clean.

Essential oils are the most potent form of plant medicine and therefore must be respected and handled with care. Many essential oils must be diluted in water or a carrier oil before use. Some essential oils may have contraindications for use when pregnant or for people with health conditions or skin sensitivities. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult your physician before using.
